Intel
Corporation starts the next phase
of Indian outsourcing expansion.
The world's largest chip maker Intel
Corporation has rolled out the second
phase of its India Development Centre
and said the first product designed
exclusively for the domestic market
would be launched by the year end.
"Yesterday, we inaugurated
the second phase of Intel's India
campus," Patrick P Gelsinger,
Senior Vice President at Intel said
in his keynote address at the Intel
Development Forum here on Thursday.
The second phase of the Intel campus
in Bangalore has been set up with
an investment of US $43 million.
The company had invested the same
amount in the first phase of the
campus.
At present, headcount at Intel's
India Development Centre stands
at 2,700 and is expected to touch
3,000 by the end of this year.
Apart from working on cutting edge
products for the world market, Intel's
research and development centre
has a team working on technology
platforms suitable for India.
"We had set up a Platform Definition
Centre at our India development
centre six months back. The centre
draws up people from various divisions
of Intel, who work on designing
customised technology platforms
for the Indian market," Director
South Asia (Sales and Marketing
Group) Amar Babu said.
At present, the company is running
pilots on community personal computers
in 10-12 villages. These PCs can
run on a battery and can work in
a high temperature and dust environment.
"We will launch the technology
platform suited for Indian conditions
by the end of this year," Babu
said.
